Domestic violence is more common than generally supposed and is a problem for both partners.

The abuser because of his or her lack of restraint in respect of the person they once believed or perhaps still believe to be their most significant other and the abused because of the often shattering effect that violence has not only to them but any children of the relationship.

Violence is not a proven method of resolving difficulties within a relationship and it should not be tolerated, excused or acceptable in any circumstances. The same goes for threats of violence, intimidation and harassment.

The problem is that many people who are victims of an abusive partner have had their self esteem destroyed over time, they find it difficult to take any action to stop it. Abusers on the other hand often feel that violence is their only outlet for the frustration they feel in the relationship.

Violence in a relationship is tragic and sometimes needs the intervention of the Court. This may take the form of an Injunction or even Police intervention. At McAras we know that domestic violence erodes families. We are committed to dealing quickly with emergency situations and have been able to bring emergency cases to the Court within the hour. There are specific Laws in place to tackle domestic violence.

All our Solicitors at McAras have a detailed knowledge and experience of the Law in this area and can advise you. We can put you in touch with organisations who can support and counsel you. We can take immediate action as a priority to go straight to Court to obtain Court Orders backed by a Power of Arrest where possible, to forbid further violence and threats. In certain circumstances the Court has power to Order a violent partner to leave the home, even if the property is in the abusers name.

If you are a violent partner reading this, you need to take steps TODAY to change your behaviour and stop the cycle of violence.
